Replacing Aging Backup Power at a Major Australian Medical Facility

Replacing Backup Power at a Major Australian Medical Facility

Aging infrastructure is a growing challenge across many large facilities, particularly in environments where power reliability is non-negotiable.

When a major Australian medical facility identified the need to replace an aging standby generator system, the objective was clear: deliver a modern, reliable solution that could integrate seamlessly into an existing building, without compromising performance or safety. This project required more than a simple generator swap. It called for a custom solution, delivering standby power within the constraints of an established facility.

The Challenge

The existing system had reached the end of its service life. While it had performed reliably over the years, the risks associated with aging equipment, particularly in a critical environment, made replacement essential. The installation presented several key challenges: a rooftop plant room location within an operational building, limited space and existing infrastructure constraints, a remote fuel source located multiple levels below the generator, the need to upgrade outdated exhaust and ventilation systems and maintaining compliance while ensuring long-term serviceability. This was not a like-for-like replacement. It was an infrastructure upgrade requiring careful planning and execution.

The Solution

Genelite supplied and integrated a 350kVA standby generator, powered by a Cummins 6LTAA9.5G1 engine, selected for its proven reliability and suitability for standby applications. The generator was installed as an open-type unit within the rooftop plant room, allowing it to integrate with the building’s existing acoustic and structural environment while enabling tailored ventilation and exhaust solutions. Every aspect of the system was designed to work within the constraints of the building, ensuring performance without compromise.

Engineering the Installation

Installing a generator within an existing rooftop plant room introduces a unique set of engineering considerations as the customer expected minimal modifications to the existing room. In this case, the project required a complete exhaust system re- design and installation to ensure safe and efficient discharge, along with modifications to the existing ventilation system to manage heat rejection and airflow requirements without affecting the new generator performance. Careful positioning of the generator was also critical to suit ongoing service access. The system was engineered specifically for the environment, ensuring optimal performance and maintainability.

Fuel System Integration

One of the most technically demanding aspects of the project was the integration of the fuel system. The generator is supplied by a bunded bulk fuel tank located in the building’s basement, requiring fuel to be transferred vertically across multiple levels to the rooftop installation. To achieve this, Genelite delivered a complete fuel transfer solution, including fuel piping from basement to rooftop, transfer pumps designed for consistent and reliable delivery, and a dedicated control system to manage fuel transfer and overall system operation. This was fully integrated with the generator to ensure seamless standby functionality. This approach ensures that fuel supply remains reliable, within a complex building layout, while maintaining safety and compliance.

The Outcome

The result is a fully integrated standby power system that brings the facility up to modern standards while respecting the constraints of the existing infrastructure. The upgraded system delivers significantly improved reliability, a future-ready installation designed for long-term operation, enhanced safety through upgraded fuel, exhaust, and ventilation systems, and improved serviceability. Most importantly, the facility now has confidence that its backup power system will perform when it’s needed most.

A Practical Approach to Complex Upgrades

Projects like this highlight the importance of experience when working within existing buildings. Replacing critical infrastructure is rarely straightforward, particularly when systems span multiple levels and must integrate with legacy design. At Genelite, the focus is always on delivering practical, engineered solutions that align with real-world conditions. This ensures reliability, compliance, and long-term performance.
