Genelite Put 500kVA of Emergency Power to the Test
When the mains power fails, a standby generator needs to do more than simply start, it must accept the required load and deliver stable power without hesitation.
Genelite recently welcomed representatives from a leading Brisbane university to witness the load testing of their new 500kVA diesel generator. The visit gave the customer a firsthand look at the system’s performance before it was delivered to site.
Emergency Power for a Modern University
University campuses operate critical infrastructure including laboratories, communications, security systems, lifts, lighting and other essential services.
Even a short power interruption can disrupt teaching and research, affect thousands of students and staff, and place critical systems at risk. The university therefore required a substantial standby power solution capable of supporting nominated infrastructure during a mains failure.
A 500kVA diesel generator was selected for the project, but supplying the right generator was only the beginning. Before delivery, its operation and output needed to be thoroughly tested and verified.
Why Load Testing Matters
A generator can start and run correctly without a connected load, but that does not prove how it will perform when faced with significant electrical demand.
Load bank testing applies a controlled electrical load to the generator, simulating the demands it may experience in a real emergency. This allows the complete system to be assessed under realistic operating conditions.
During the test, the Genelite team monitored key performance areas, including:
- Voltage and frequency stability
- Engine and alternator performance
- Cooling system operation
- Control system functionality
- Warning and shutdown protections
- Response to changing electrical loads
- Performance under sustained demand
For an emergency standby system, this verification is critical. When an outage occurs, the generator must be ready to start, accept the load and maintain stable power when it matters most.
A Customer-Witnessed Test
Representatives from the university attended Genelite’s facility to witness the 500kVA generator being put through its paces.
Customer-witnessed testing provides greater transparency and gives project stakeholders the opportunity to see the equipment operating before delivery. It also allows them to ask questions, learn more about the generator’s systems and gain a clearer understanding of how it will support their facility.
Throughout the test, the Genelite team monitored the generator’s performance and reviewed the relevant operating data with the customer.
The visit provided more than a technical demonstration. It gave the customer confidence that the generator had been properly tested and was ready for the next stage of the project.
Reducing Risk Before Delivery
Testing at Genelite’s facility also helps reduce the risk of delays during installation and commissioning.
With the generator’s core performance verified before delivery, the on-site team can concentrate on electrical integration, controls, transfer arrangements and final testing within the completed installation.
This is especially important for a generator of this size, where coordination between the equipment supplier, electrical contractors, consultants and facility managers is essential.
