As Tropical Cyclone Alfred tore through southeast Queensland, communities braced for its impact. Fierce winds, torrential rain, and widespread power outages left thousands in the dark, with many businesses and essential services scrambling for backup power.​

While the storm brought chaos, it also highlighted the importance of preparation and community support. At Genelite, we experienced firsthand the value of preparedness, seeing reliable backup power solutions play a crucial role in keeping vital services operational.​

The cyclone, one of the most significant weather events to hit Queensland in years, caused widespread disruption. Across the region:​

• More than 400,000 properties lost power across Queensland and New South Wales, with 33,000 experiencing prolonged power outages.
• Emergency services worked around the clock to clear debris, assist with evacuations, and restore critical infrastructure. ​
• Local businesses became community lifelines, providing fuel, supplies, and hot meals to those in need.​

For many, the morning after the storm was a time of relief but also reflection.​

Keeping a Local Business Running: BP Redland Bay

Amidst the destruction, one BP service station in Redland Bay stood as a vital lifeline for the community. While most surrounding businesses remained in darkness, a Genelite diesel generator kept the fuel pumps running, the coffee machine brewing, and the doors open to serve the community.​

Co-owner Trent Turnham had prepared in advance by ensuring a reliable Genelite generator was ready to go. As the only open service station in the area, it quickly became a hub for emergency responders, residents, and anyone in need of essentials.​

Many businesses that had prepared in advance with a backup generator were able to continue operations, minimising disruption and supporting their communities. Those without backup power found themselves scrambling to secure last-minute solutions. As one of Queensland’s largest generator suppliers, we saw firsthand how critical disaster preparedness is.
