1,650kVA Cummins Generators Prepared for Brisbane CBD Installation

1,650kVA Cummins Generators Prepared for Brisbane CBD Installation

This Cummins-powered generator was recently loaded for transport ahead of installation into a high-rise building in the Brisbane CBD.

Rated at 1,500kVA prime and 1,650kVA standby, it is one of four generator sets being supplied for the project. Together, the four units provide substantial standby capacity for the building’s nominated essential services during a mains power failure.

Standby Power for a High-Rise Building

A power outage in a high-rise building can affect far more than lighting. Depending on the building’s electrical design, standby power may be required for systems such as:

High-rise buildings present several challenges when planning standby power. Large motors, pumps, chillers and lift systems can place considerable demand on a generator, particularly during startup.

The electrical design must account for these starting currents, the priority of each load and the order in which equipment is brought back online. Load sequencing allows essential systems to be restored in a controlled manner without placing the full demand on the generators at once.

The Solution

Four generators, each rated at 1,650kVA standby and 1,500kVA prime and is powered by Cummins KTA50-GS8 diesel engines.

The KTA50-GS8 is a heavy-duty V16 engine designed for large-scale power generation applications. Its output and response make it well suited to installations where substantial electrical loads need to be supported quickly and reliably.

Key project specifications include:

Planning a Project of This Scale

Supplying four generators of this size requires careful coordination across transport, lifting, electrical integration and final commissioning.

CBD installations bring additional access and logistics challenges. Delivery times, heavy-vehicle access, crane movements and final positioning may all need to be coordinated around traffic restrictions, neighbouring properties and other construction activity.

The installation must also account for cooling airflow, exhaust discharge, fuel storage, vibration isolation, noise management and safe access for future servicing. The generators must then be integrated with the building’s transfer, control and distribution systems.

Depending on the final electrical design, the control system may coordinate generator starting, load sharing, synchronisation and staged connection of the building’s essential loads. The complete system must respond as intended when mains power fails, not simply start each generator individually.

Power When the Building Needs It

Large standby systems spend much of their service life waiting, but they must be ready to respond without hesitation when an outage occurs.

Regular servicing, fuel management, battery checks and load testing will be essential to maintaining the system once commissioned. Testing the generators together with the transfer equipment, controls and connected loads helps confirm that the entire standby system will perform correctly under real operating conditions.

For a Brisbane CBD high-rise, reliable standby power is critical to maintaining safe access, essential services and building operations during a loss of mains supply.

With four 1,650kVA Cummins-powered generator sets forming part of the project, this installation is being built with the capacity required to support a demanding high-rise environment.
